Traditional as it may seem, the watchmaking industry is constantly developing. The last watchmaker to put a new spin on creating timepieces is Richard Mille. Named after its founder, the brand with its radically original watches shook the traditional industry. One of the most famous timepieces produced by the brand is the Richard Mille Perpetual Calendar.
The first feature that distinguishes this timepiece from the traditional watches out there is the extremely lightweight material from which it is made. While the watchmaking world still considers weight equal to value, Richard Mille thinks as a constructor of racing cars and designs his Radically Original watches using strong and lightweight materials. The base-plate of the Richard Mille Perpetual Calendar is made from carbon fiber and titanium and weighs practically nothing.
The case of the timepiece is also quite innovative. First of all, the process of its production is very labor-consuming. To construct a single case, the watchmakers of the brand need to perform 202 different machining operations. The construction of the case is stunning. Using a whole new approach, Richard Mille did not use a casing ring designing the case.
The Richard Mille Perpetual Calendar is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement with a flyback chronograph function. This means that the chronograph movement can be stopped, reset and restarted with a single push of the button between 4 and 5 o’clock.
The timepiece features another horological complication: a date display. The date is displayed in a horizontal aperture at 12 o’clock which is outlined in red. Thanks to the annual calendar, months with less than 31 days are automatically taken into account.
The dial of the Richard Mille Perpetual Calendar is also extraordinary – the usual blank spaces are perforated, while the hours, minutes, seconds and the sub-dial outlines are left in the solid.
