Pre-Baselworld 2010 Ulysse Nardin El Toro GMT Perpetual Watch In the years following its 1983 resurrection, Swiss watchmaking house Ulysse Nardin has been responsible for many fascinating horological innovations. One of its most respected is a family of a perpetual calendar watches whose wheel-based mechanisms allow simple forward or backwards adjustments of the complex calendar functions through the crown–a user-friendly contrast from traditional perpetual calendars which depend upon a system of assigned corrector buttons, and may only be adjusted in the forwards manner. Clearly, this intelligent system also permits these Ulysse Nardin timepieces a degree of safety for setting errors not possible with conventional perpetual calendar designs. In 2010, the historic brand from Le Locle, Switzerland continues its record of accomplishment in this area with the El Toro–a strikingly modern variation of the acclaimed GMT± Perpetual. Presented in 18-karat red gold or platinum, the Ulysse Nardin El Toro watch stands out through the selective use of ceramic components. This high-tech, nearly scratchproof zirconium oxide material is used to craft both the 24-hour bezel and the twin case pushers dedicated to setting the independent 12-hour hand. The precise, elegant craftsmanship of the 43mm case and the immaculate gloss of the ceramic bezel compliment a dial which is among the most intricate and beautiful in the luxury watch industry. A Cotes de Geneve patterned background serves up a feast of detail centered around a T-shaped structure and adjacent large date indicator, both of which are secured down with blued screws. The former is cleverly situated in such a way as to reveal the discs for the year, and the disc for months. Legibility of these logically arranged displays is further enhanced by large skeletonized hour and minute hands, which despite the minimalistic construction, impress with bold size and exceptionally brilliant luminous tips. As with other Ulysse Nardin GMT± Perpetual watches, the El Toro displays a distinct arrow-tipped central hand that coordinates with the bezel markings to present a second time zone in a 24-hour format. A large sapphire crystal exhibition window centers the caseback with its six securing screws and inscriptions of brand, limited edition series, and the 100-meter water resistance rating. This portal reveals the remarkable UN-32 caliber whose visual charms include bridges with blued screws and circular Cotes de Geneve decoration, as well as a truly impressive central rotor fashioned from matte-finished 18K white gold with the Ulysse Nardin anchor symbol in black enamel. Each of these exclusive self-winding movements is sent to an independent office of the Swiss Official Chronometer Control (COSC), where 15 days of tests in various positions and temperatures verify precision performance set forth under exacting parameters. With mainspring fully charged, the UN-32 delivers a power reserve of 45 hours. Ulysse Nardin will produce 500 individually numbered examples of the El Toro GMT± Perpetual watch. Each Ulysse Nardin El Toro is completed by a gracefully designed rubber strap with two vertically pronounced motifs, and the Ulysse Nardin brand symbol; naturally, the strap can be trimmed to obtain an exact fit to the wearer’s wrist. Closure is provided by an elegant push-button folding clasp manufactured from a combination of ceramic and metal.

In 2007, at the WPHH, the renowned watchmaker Pierre Kunz officially unveiled its remarkable retrograde mechanical watch, named Infinity Looping. This timekeeper owes its name to the movements performed by a single hand in order to indicate the hours and minutes. It is attainable due to a cycloid hour hand, which travels along a scale that will make you think of a child’s Spirograph.

Although this watch is a bit difficult to read at the beginning, it is surely a true feast for the eyes.

No matter how appealing the Infinity Looping watch is, its name is misleading the English speaking audience. The point is that the Americans, for example, may perceive “looping” as “loopy”, which will definitely prevent watch enthusiasts from taking this timepiece seriously: these words seem to be similar, yet have different meanings. In Europe, however, this term stands for a part of a roller coaster that takes the riders upside down.

Therefore, Pierre Kunz’s U.S. sales manager Edward Suhyda found a creative solution to avoid misunderstanding mentioned and to attract the best possible attention of American watch lovers. Since Mr. Suhyda regarded this incredible timepiece as “insane”, he decided to bestow it with the name of “Insanity”. Thus, the U.S. market received an exceptional watch with the name, specially invented with this area in mind.

The Pierre Kunz Insanity watch is offered in a special box, also created by Suhyda. It is proposed with a straight jacket. Once the owner opens it, he will discover the infinitely looping watch, placed within a padded cell.

Offered in any number of color combinations, the Pierre Kunz watch employs a 44 mm stainless steel or blackened steel case.

Franck Muller Aeternitas Mega 4

Franck Muller, being a true “Master of Complications”, has made a dream come true –a wristwatch packed with the record number of complications!

The timepiece, built from 1,483 components, boasts 36 complications and 25 of them are visible. The 1000-year calendar Franck Muller watch undoubtedly deserves a record price of 2.7 million dollars!

The Master Watchmakers of Genthod faced a remarkable challenge – to create a wristwatch to feature all presently-known horological complications. They used the Aeternitas movement as a base, and the Mega 4 with its grand and small Westminster chime striking-work, the only one available with a tourbillon displayed on the dial.

The watchmakers added a minute repeater, a mono-pushpiece split-seconds chronograph, a perpetual calendar secular, and an equation of time varying just by 6.8 seconds per lunar month, implying one day every thousand years!

The Franck Muller Aeternitas Mega 4, the most complex wristwatch ever created, is an elegantly designed timepiece in the highly-respected traditions of the old cadraturiers (the mechanisms positioned under the dial) of the Vallee de Joux, Switzerland.

Initially, the Master Watchmakers incorporated the Mega into the Aeternitas project. The basis was represented by an automatic Tourbillon, with two motors. They hollowed out the plate on the dial side to hold the striking mechanism.

If compared to the Aeternitas versions, the four Aeternitas Mega versions are 0.2mm thick to accommodate the striking mechanism of the “Chime of Westminster”. The Mega is highly appreciated due to its “Grande Sonnerie” Chime of Westminster striking mechanism that sounds on the hours and quarter hours. The “Petite Sonnerie” version does not strike on the hour, meaning it only sounds on the quarter hours.

The large and small striking mechanisms are programmed via simply pressing a waterproof push-button found at 10.30 on the case. The push-button programmable function allows to stop the movement of the striking mechanism. The minute repeater allows to activate the “Chime of Westminster” any time it is required, providing the full strike of the hours, the Westminster quarters and the minutes.

The “Grand Sonnerie” is the only timepiece, with the Tourbillon seen on the dial side, implying the limited space for the “Grand Sonnerie” mechanism and thus the highly complicated design.

The nicely chiselled and decorated pieces of the mechanism may be admired via a sapphire crystal case back.

The Franck Muller Aeternitas Mega 4, a true masterpiece of complications and know-how, has been elaborated and manufactured by the Franck Muller group, demonstrating their outstanding skills and ability in the Art of Watchmaking.

The first piece of the exceptional Franck Muller watch was delivered to an American collector at a special ceremony held in Monaco last November; the second Aeternitas Mega 4 is expected to be available in the nearest future.

the Master of Complications has scheduled two WPHH – World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie – exhibitions to be organized at its Watchland site in Genthod on 17-23 January and 17-27 March. The visitors (about 5,000 visitors and 600 journalists) will be expected from 9.00 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Franck Muller group will provide a comprehensive view of its seven brands: Franck Muller, Pierre Kunz, ECW, Rodolphe Montres & Bijoux, Barthelay, Backes & Strauss and Martin Braun.

The new Franck Muller collections will be presented in specially built pavilions to feature nicely arranged stands, elegant design and contemporary decor.

Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303The heart of the watch is the movement. Apparently, Bvlgari tried to emphasize this by naming the watch after the movement that beats inside its case – the Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303. The movement of the timepiece has a particularly important function. Thanks to its small size, the Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303 is the world’s thinnest self-winding watch.

Just 5.5 mm thick and 42mm wide, the round case of the timepiece is made from stainless steel. At first sight, it seems that the bezel of the Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303 is also crafted from this material, but, after looking at it attentively, it becomes clear that it is made from white gold. The bezel has the distinctive “Bvlgari” signature engraved across it.

The inside of the case contains the Calibro 303, composed of 303 elements and set with 37 jewels. The movement of the watch is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional – it provides a power reserve of 45 hours and beats 21,600 times per hour, ensuring an immaculate performance of the timepiece. As usual, the movement can be admired through a transparent case back.

But what is truly worth admiring is the dial of the Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303. It has a three-layer structure with various kinds of finishing. The first layer is a metal base decorated with a sunburst pattern. Then comes the anthracite layer with vertical treatment, and the upper layer is represented by three sub-dials and faceted hand-applied markers.

The hands of the watch, as well as the hour and minute counters at 3 and 9 o’clock are rose-gold toned, while the seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock comes in different colors, depending on the color pattern of the dial.
