The Zenith legendary El Primero movement was premiered in 1969 as the first high-frequency mechanical automatic chronograph caliber to join the world of watchmaking. The initial El Primero chronograph movement has subtly evolved over the time, yet maintaining its signature features. Now, it is presented as an El Primero 469 calibre to animate a vintage-styled model with a distinctive contemporary touch.

The new Zenith watch, to join the New Vintage 69 Collection, pays tribute to the legendary caliber.

With a remarkable balance frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, the movement guarantees 1/10th of a second precision. The fully integrated design of the caliber requires a minimum of space and measures short times in the most reliable and accurate way.

The movement is built from 278 strategically located and finely tuned parts that are controlled by a column wheel responding at orders received via the push-buttons of the Zenith watch. The transparent sapphire crystal case-back allows to rest one’s eyes at an oscillating weight embellished with Cotes-de-Geneve.

The original case has been redesigned to come up with an even more powerful effect. The shiny plain black dial is protected by a double glare-proof sapphire crystal. The dial demonstrates a smart play on contrasting colors. It is completed with manually applied hour-markers coated with Superluminova, as well as black bead-blasted hands provided with white Superluminova for perfect legibility under any light conditions.

You will notice the small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and a date window at 4.30. The chronograph function is presented with help of a central seconds hand, 30-minute and 12-hour sub-dials at 3 and 6 o’clock respectively. The tachometric scale featured around the dial rim allows to measure the speed of travel.

The sophisticated Zenith New Vintage 69 watch, goes on an elegant black alligator leather strap fitted with a stainless steel pin buckle.

Since 1865, Zenith has cherished the tradition of introducing innovative mechanisms and groundbreaking timepieces. Now, the brand is pleased to reveal a new timepiece to join its highly successful Academy collection – the limited-edition Academy Zero-G watch that boasts Zenith’s revolutionary Zero-G Tourbillon.

The innovative Tourbillon Zero-G movement joined the world of watchmaking in 2008. The movement demonstrated a revolutionary self-regulating gyroscopic tourbillon carriage put on a cardan the same way as a marine chronometer. The gyroscopic carriage provided a flat position of the regulating organ, thus keeping the mechanism away from the gravity effects and significantly improving its accuracy.

The work of marine chronometers was based on the zero gravity principle and they represented the ultimate “portable” precision instruments that allowed to determine a ship’s position, implying safe maritime voyages.

Zenith timepieces of this type appeared in the beginning of the 20th century and are still highly coveted collector’s pieces. The brand has continuously gained more expertise in this field and the elaboration of the Zero-G movement is a true feat of sophisticated miniaturization and cutting-edge technology.

The new Zenith Academy Zero Gravity Tourbillon watch demonstrates subtle aesthetic details and fine craftsmanship, including the stepped double-godrooned case, the sword-like hands, and the barleycorn and wave guilloche dial patterns.

The timepiece catches attention by a variety of nice modern touches created with help of the asymmetrical position of the displays. You will notice the off-centered hours and minutes at 11 o’clock and the Zero-G Tourbillon module at 5 o’clock. Together they form a figure 8, symbolizing good luck and infinity. The small seconds display is featured at 7.30 – almost diagonally opposite the crown at 2 o’clock. The multilayered dial is shielded by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

The movement beating inside the timepiece, with its amazing intricacies, may be admired through a transparent exhibition case-back. The El Primero 8801 self-winding 43-jewel calibre incorporates a rotor crafted in 950 PT platinum, and a gyroscopic carriage built from 160 parts, including 10 conical-geared wheels and 6 ball bearings. The movement beats at the frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour and gives an advantage of a 50-hour power reserve.

The new Zenith Academy Zero Gravity Tourbillon watch, is presented on a black crocodile leather strap provided with silky alvazel calfskin lining and fitted with an 18K gold triple folding clasp. The Zenith watch is available with a case either in white or rose gold.

TAG Heuer Caliber 1887: A New In-House Chronograph Movement
Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer, long known for its close association with sports timing technology, has announced a new in-house manufactured chronograph movement as part of its 150th anniversary celebration. The movement, which features a number of interesting technical details and operates via a traditional column wheel, carries the designation of Caliber 1887. This number is not random; it references the year in which the company–at that time known simply as Heuer–pioneered an oscillating pinion which would prove revolutionary to the construction of chronograph mechanisms in general.

According to a press statement from Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of TAG Heuer, the Caliber 1887 and its process of conceptualization to production has been a project nearly four years in the making. Along the way, over 20 million Swiss Francs have been spent, with 45 employment positions created across the brand’s various manufacturing facilities. The bridges, mainplate and other key movement parts are manufactured in TAG Heuer’s Cornol site by ultra-modern CNC machines. Complete movements are assembled in a dust-free environment in TAG Heuer’s newest manufacturing wing in La Chaux-de-Fonds, again using the benefits of the most modern technology to significantly automate the process. The resulting product promises to set an ideal balance between significant production levels, functional reliability, and superior horological quality.

The TAG Heuer Caliber 1887 chronograph movement is self-winding, and recharges its mainspring barrel via a distinctly skeletonized centrally mounted rotor; the design and decoration of this latter component echoes the dialwork of many of the latest models in TAG Heuer’s Carrera timepiece collection. Fully wound, the mechanism will drive the TAG Heuer watch for 40-50 hours, the lower figure being applicable if the chronograph mechanism is allowed to run continuously. A bridge with distinctive cutaway sections reveals the most important and technically fascinating parts of the mechanism, including the distinctive double lever and a visually dominant blued column wheel which precisely controls the start, stop and return to zero sequences. The glucydur balance wheel pulsates to and fro 28,800 times per hour and features an eccentric adjustment screw that enables the TAG Heuer watchmakers to precisely adjust the rate average to a tolerance of -4/+4 seconds per day. Dimensionally, the Caliber 1887 movement stands 7.1mm in height and has a diameter of 29.3 millimeters.

TAG Heuer has emphasized that while the Caliber 1887 will enrich the current palette of TAG Heuer in-house movements, it won’t eliminate the brand’s use of proven calibers from other manufacturers, including Zenith watch, ETA, and Dubois-Depraz. The house is also forthright in pointing out that outside suppliers will play a small but important role in the makeup of the Caliber 1887 movement itself, most notably in such escapement components as the balance wheel and hairspring.

Zenith Defy Xtreme Split Second

It is hard to stay young when one is 144 years old. Zenith, one of the oldest Swiss watch brands, manages to do it brilliantly. With the Zenith Defy Xtreme watch collection, nobody would dare to call Zenith old-fashioned. The Zenith watches making part of the collection have a strong unusual design and are impressive both aesthetically and mechanically.
Among these sport-chic timepieces, the Zenith Defy Xtreme Split Second has a special place. The design of the watch is closely related to that of the F1 racing cars. For instance, the dial of the Zenith Defy Xtreme Split Second is made using the method of construction employed in car manufacturing – multi-layering. Each of the elements of the dial is made using a unique technology and materials. The case of the Zenith Defy Xtreme Split Second is designed in such a way as to resist shock.
Apart from shock-resistance, the watch has many more useful features. The sapphire glass protecting the dial is coated with an anti-reflective layer that makes it possible to read the time even on the sunniest day. The applied rhodium indexes, Arabic numerals and hands are painted with Superluminova, a special material that absorbs sunlight and stays bright deep in darkness.
Speaking of the direct functions of the Zenith Defy Xtreme Split Second – telling the time – it performs them very effectively. Naturally, the central hands indicate the hours, minutes and seconds. But that is not all that the Zenith Defy Xtreme Split Second watch can do. Other than the date display window at 6 o’clock, there are two counters at 3 and 9 o’clock. The watch also features a graduated unidirectional rotating bezel that can be used to mark the elapsed time.

Zenith Port Royal

Zenith has an outstanding reputation for high quality watches. Thus far, the company has won more than a thousand and a half awards for precision. The watchmaker offers several watch collections both to men and women.
The Zenith Port Royal Collection is one of the most popular collections of the brand. It includes timepieces with rectangular and round cases, designed to be suitable for every occasion and outfit. Even choosy customers will find what they need – Zenith Port Royal watches are made from a variety of materials, including steel, gold and titanium, while dial and straps variations are innumerable.

The company equips its Zenith Port Royal timepieces with the El Primero movement. It should be noted that Zenith is one of the few watchmaking companies producing its own automatic movements. The Zenith EL Primero is the only movement in the world which beats 36000 times per hour. Due to this extremely high vibration rate, the chronograph is accurate to one tenth of a second.

Zenith has recently introduced a few avant-garde Zenith Port Royal timepieces. The Mega Port Royal Tourbillon, unveiled at Baselworld 2008, features a titanium case with a skeleton dial covered with a grill. It seems that the watchmakers wanted to complicate admiring of the movement, though they were probably inspired by the replica zenith watches which were worn by soldiers during the First World War. The grill was designed to protect the glass crystal.
The case of the new Zenith Mega Port Royal Open Concept is made of black titanium, while the dial is crafted from an extremely strong material, developed using space-based technologies. The timepiece was inspired by steel buildings of New York.
The last new timepiece of the collection is the Zenith Mega Port Royal Grande Date Open Concept, a remodeled version of the Port Royal Open Concept.
